Best all round Snapper Outfit

SHANNON’S ANSWER

Short answer

G’day John. Your proposed Shimano outfit will certainly catch snapper, and the Torium Jigger 1500 is a good choice for the type of fishing you described. However, for an all-round snapper outfit in 30–60 metres, I would match that reel with the Shimano Extraction 682 OH 20–40 lb rod rather than the heavier 662 OH 30–50 lb model.

Spool it with good-quality 30 lb braid and use approximately four to five metres of 30 lb leader for general snapper fishing. Increase the leader to 40 lb when fishing rough reef, rubble or heavier structure.

Why I would choose this outfit

The 30–50 lb Extraction would work, but it is probably heavier than you need for medium-sized snapper. It would also put the new outfit fairly close to the heavier Daiwa Saltiga setup you already own.

The 20–40 lb Extraction should be lighter in the hand, provide better bite detection and make average snapper more enjoyable to catch while retaining enough power for a quality fish. Your Saltiga outfit can remain the heavier option when you expect bigger fish, stronger current or rougher country.

The Torium Jigger 1500 suits what you are looking for. It has a compact body that should be comfortable to palm, and turning the handle engages the reel without needing to flick the clutch manually. Its fast retrieve will also help when recovering line from 60 metres.

For this outfit, I would choose 30 lb braid rather than 40 lb. It will cut through the water better, help you hold bottom with less weight and balance nicely with the 20–40 lb rod. A 30 lb leader is suitable for general snapper fishing, while 40 lb provides extra abrasion resistance around rough ground.

If you regularly use large sinkers, fish strong current or expect cobia, kingfish and other powerful bycatch, then your original 30–50 lb rod and 40 lb braid combination would be the safer choice.

What I would buy

  • Shimano Torium Jigger 1500 overhead reel
  • Shimano Extraction 682 OH 20–40 lb rod
  • Quality 30 lb braid
  • Four to five metres of 30 lb leader for general ground
  • A spool of 40 lb leader for rough reef and heavier structure

Before purchasing, take the reel into the shop and fit it to the rod. Make sure the grip, reel position and trigger feel comfortable in your hand because that is something specifications cannot tell you.

One thing to watch is the budget. At normal retail prices, the rod and reel may exceed $500 before adding braid. I would look for a package deal or wait for a sale rather than changing to an outfit you do not really want.

Overall, you are looking in the right direction. My choice would be the Torium Jigger 1500 on the 20–40 lb Extraction with 30 lb braid. It will cover the majority of your Sunshine Coast snapper fishing without duplicating the heavier Saltiga outfit you already own.

Cheers,
Shannon
