THE QUESTION

Why aren’t my soft plastics catching fish?

SHANNON’S ANSWER

Short answer

Soft plastics usually fail because they are being fished in the wrong place, at the wrong depth or too quickly. The colour of the plastic matters far less than putting a natural-looking lure in front of feeding fish. Concentrate on location, depth and presentation before continually changing lures.

Why this happens

Soft plastics need to stay where the fish are feeding. If your jighead is too light, the plastic may drift above the fish. If it is too heavy, it can drop unnaturally and spend less time in the strike zone.

Many anglers also work their plastics too aggressively. Fish will often take a soft plastic while it is sinking or sitting still between movements. If you keep winding and jerking without pausing, you may pull the lure away before a fish can grab it.

Your plastic also needs to be rigged straight. A bent or twisted plastic will spin through the water instead of swimming naturally. Blunt hooks, damaged plastics and strong tackle can also reduce your chances, especially in clear or heavily fished water.

Sometimes the main problem is simply fishing where there are no active fish. Soft plastics cannot catch fish that are not there. Look for bait, current lines, drop-offs, weed edges, rubble, structure or fish showing on your sounder.

What to change next trip

  • Rig the plastic perfectly straight and leave the hook point completely exposed.
  • Choose a jighead that reaches the required depth while still allowing a natural fall.
  • Slow down your retrieve and add longer pauses—the lure is often eaten as it sinks.
  • Keep enough contact with the line to detect a bite without stopping the plastic from moving naturally.
  • Cast around visible structure, bait schools, current changes and depth variations instead of repeatedly working empty water.
  • Start with a natural colour in clear water and a stronger colour or silhouette in dirty water.
  • If nothing happens after several good casts, change your retrieve, depth or location before blaming the plastic.

Once you begin getting bites, remember the depth, retrieve speed and part of the structure where they occurred. Repeating that pattern is usually more important than finding a supposedly perfect lure colour.
